> GME's whole story is about who really owns the shares. Tokenized ownership makes that something anyone can check. Here's how the two worlds could meet.

Most people have heard the story of GME. The personalities. The headlines. Maybe you have even walked into one of its stores.

This is a look at where that story stands on chain, and how GameStop's history carried it to a crossroads with the on-chain world.

What happens when one of the most talked-about cases of "owning your stock" meets a new kind of ownership? Tokenized shares, held on a public chain, that anyone can check.

## The one stock about ownership

GameStop is not only a stock. For a lot of people it became a question: when you buy a share, what do you actually hold, and who holds it for you?

Most shares are held in "street name." Your broker holds them for you, and on the company's own books the registered owner is usually Cede and Co., a nominee tied to the central clearing system. You own the economic value, but you do not appear on the register by name. The SEC explains this plainly in its investor bulletin on holding your securities.

There is another way, called registered ownership, or "direct registration." The share is recorded in your own name on the issuer's books, held by the issuer or its transfer agent. Around the events of 2021, some GameStop holders began moving shares into direct registration, to hold them in their own name instead of through a broker.

People disagree about why. The plain fact underneath the arguments is simple. Holders wanted proof of what they owned, held in a way they did not have to take on trust.

## GameStop is already on chain

A public blockchain answers that same wish in a different way. On chain, a holding is an entry on a ledger anyone can read.

GameStop is already there. Several issuers now offer a tokenized GME, and each one is a separate product with its own rules:

- Backed issues GMEx through xStocks, which Backed states is backed one to one by GameStop Class A shares held with a third-party custodian.
- Dinari issues GME.d, which Dinari states is a one-to-one backed "dShare" representing a GameStop share held in a custodial account with a US broker-dealer.
- Other issuers, including Ondo and Robinhood, have minted their own tokenized GameStop. CoinGecko lists these products side by side.

This site's board does not track GameStop yet. The tokens above are reported from each issuer's own pages, not read from live on-chain data here. When an issuer's GME is read into the board, it will appear like any other stock, with its price, holders and events stamped and sourced.

## What on-chain ownership does, and does not, change

A tokenized share makes some things checkable that were not before. The token supply, the number of holders, and every transfer are public. You can look up your own balance on a block explorer without asking anyone.

It does not make a token the same thing as a share. Each token is a product from one issuer, wrapped in that issuer's legal terms. The issuer decides what you legally hold and who is allowed to buy. A one-to-one backed token is a claim on a share held by a custodian. It is not a share registered in your own name. Direct registration and a tokenized wrapper are two different answers to the same question, and they are not the same answer.

## Where to check

Do not take any of this on trust. That is the whole point.

- The issuers publish their own token pages. Read what xStocks, Dinari, Ondo and Robinhood say, in their words.
- CoinGecko lists the tokenized GameStop products next to each other.
- The SEC bulletin sets out street name, registered ownership and direct registration in plain terms.

This is a report, not advice. Nothing here is a reason to buy, hold or sell anything. It is a record of where one very famous stock now lives, and of the different ways its holders can prove what they own.
